Aragón, summer 2026
This summer, Aragón experienced the worst outbreak of forest fires in its recent history: more than 44,000 hectares burnt, villages evacuated, one fatality, and a team of forest firefighters on indefinite strike over precarious working conditions and staff shortages. The media covered the flames, the smoke, the epic scale of the fire-fighting effort. This documentary begins where that coverage ends: the day after.
It is not a film about the fire. It is a film about what the fire leaves behind: the scorched countryside, the farms that were a lifetime’s work reduced to ashes, the villages that have seen their landscape go up in flames and now have to learn to look at it differently. And the forest firefighters who put out that fire with scarce resources —without reinforcements, without recognition—and who today are taking to the streets to denounce the very same issues they were already denouncing before the disaster.
Through the voices of mayors, elderly residents and firefighters from towns in Aragon, *El silencio después del fuego* weaves an ensemble narrative about the region’s collective memory, rural depopulation and what remains once the media cameras have moved on.
